PRESS RELEASE - David Solís.
April 2006, Washington DC
PRADA GALLERY has announced the opening of its new exhibit, Memories of a River , on May 11 th through June 15 th by internationally known and award-winning Panamanian painter and engraver David Solís , introducing fourteen oil on canvas paintings and two works on paper.
"Seductive surfaces and subdued palettes transform the mundane objects painted by David Solís into mysterious entities that appear to have secret lives of their own. Fruits and vegetables, trees and furniture seem to breathe and move as organic bodies, almost anthropomorphic in their relationships and actions", writes Carol Damian, expert in Latin American art at Florida International University.
Solís was born in Panama in 1953. By 1970, he had finished his studies in Architecture and Fine Arts at the University of Panama. He worked initially as a watercolorist and held his first one-man show in 1974. In 1975, he received a grant to study art in France. In 1976 he began specializing in printmaking at the Lacourrière et Frèlaut Workshop in Paris and in 1978 he obtained the "Diplôme Supèrior des Beaux-Arts, with emphasis in drawing, from the School of Art and Architecture of Marseille-Luminy, France. Two years later, Solís established his own atelier in Montpelier, South of France, where in addition to his artistic work, he collaborated on architectural and urban projects.
